Learning Space Toolkit

I'm reposting this announcement from our colleagues at NCSU. The Toolkit is a rich resource devised to assist institutions with the planning process for new types of learning spaces, especially informal (non-classroom) spaces. I was pleased to serve on the advisory committee for this project. I hope you'll check out the website.

We are happy to announce the release of the Learning Space Toolkit.

The Learning Space Toolkit is a freely available resource designed to support the full lifecycle of a learning space design project, from defining the goals and needs to designing the space to supporting it. By using the Toolkit, institutions will be better equipped to orchestrate the planning process so that learners are better supported and spaces, technology, and services are effective. We are also interested in hearing about your institution's informal learning spaces. Please submit one or more of your spaces for consideration as featured examples in the Toolkit. Exploring Possible Futures-a message from the Dean

Library Faculty and Staff –

Influenced by technological advances and responding to how 21st century students study and learn, academic libraries are rapidly evolving their services, collections and space. In the next few years, we will be faced with significant choices regarding how we operate and how we support the mission of the university. To help us understand the scope of those choices, I have engaged the services of Raynna Bowlby, a library consultant who has worked with a number of academic research libraries. Her initial visit to OSU will be next week during which she will meet all of us and get a sense about what jobs and tasks we perform. Hazel has distributed the schedule for those meetings via an earlier email.

Beginning next fall, Raynna will lead us on a year-long exploration of innovations being tried at leading academic research libraries. This exploration will be an iterative process that involves on-site learning opportunities and facilitated group discussions which will build awareness of strategic developments in research libraries and create readiness for implementation of organizational changes. The primary focus is learning about the factors influencing research libraries, the changing nature of academic work of faculty and students in research institutions, and the contemporary initiatives being pursued by members of the Association of Research Libraries.

A key element of this exploration will be bringing innovative library leaders to campus to interact with our library faculty and staff. They will give  formal presentations regarding innovations they’ve tried or observed followed by some small group discussions. We will invite our colleagues from around the state to attend the formal presentations as well as campus faculty and administrators.

The day after the presentations, we will all meet again and Raynna will facilitate a discussion of what we heard, guide us as we consider what directions would be suitable for implementation at OSU, and help us start identifying the resources we need to flesh out these ideas.

This exploration of our possible futures will go on throughout the 2012-2013 academic year. Next summer, working together, Raynna will assist us as we begin to develop a plan of action that will move us forward.

The list of possible speakers will be managed by Raynna and me with input from all of you. We will add speakers to our list as we go along. Please let me know if you have questions.
